The 1960 Valdiva earthquake is the world's strongest earthquake with a magnitude of 9.5.The cause of the earthquake-the Chile Ridge oceanice plate slipping under the South American plate-Converging Plates.The damage by the tsunami caused by the earthquake far exceeded the destruction resulting from the earthquake itself. The tsunami spread across the Pacific reaching Hawaii, the Philippines, and even Japan.

The earthquake had triggered landslides,Tsunami and floods.It has been estimated that about 40% of the houses in Valdivia were destroyed, leaving 20,000 people homeless.

38 hours after the first shock Cordón Caulle erupted.However little attention was focused on the eruption as the media were too preoccupied with the huge damages and losses of the Earthquake.After the earthquake,a commitee was formed to tackle and solve the problems of the earthquake and in 1974 it became known as ONEMI.

Reflection~~

Well,it seems that another earthquake just happened yesterday in Chile with a magnitude of 8.8 and yet another tsunami has been set off that threatened about a quarter of the globe. The hardest hit city was Concepcion.Déjà vu much?To think that I had been doing on the exact same country,the effects were also similar to that of the Great Chilean Earthquake.My heart goes out to does injured,my deepest condolences to the victims,may you stay strong.

I feel that if the Government had paid more attention to the meteorological office,more lives could have been saved,evacuation.Also,an organisation could be set up to trace the different plates.People could inform them of certain signs,cracks,floods,landslides that could mean something more.Food Kits,emergency rations should have been stocked way before.Houses built safe from tremours.Most importantly,people should be mentally prepared for the worse,they know their countries the best.

The past is past I hope that Chile would move forward and learn from past experinces.Stay strong,Stay bright and never let your willpower fade.

1960 Valdiva earthquake

The Valdiva earthquake or Great Chilean earthquake happenened on 22 May 1960, in the afternoon(19:11 GMT).The earthquake is to date the most powerful ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.5, its resulting tsunami had affected Southern Chile.The number of fatalities is at an estimate of 6000.The president had to cancel the traditional ceremony of the Battle of Iquique to oversee the emergency efforts.

The Great Chilean earthquake came after a smaller earthquake in Aracuo Province, all telecommunications to southern Chile were cut off.The second earthquake affected all of Chile between Talca and Chiloé Island more than 400,000 square kilometers.The damage caused by the earthquake was devastating-the entire water and electricity systems of Valvida were completely destroyed,extensive areas of land were completely flooded,water became a serious issue in one of Chile's most rainy regions. It has been estimated that about 40% of the houses in Valdivia were destroyed, leaving 20,000 people homeless.The river turned brown with sediment from landslides and was full of floating debris, including entire houses.
