In ValdivaThe 1960 Valdiva earthquake is the world's strongest earthquake with a magnitude of 9.5.The cause of the earthquake-the Chile Ridge oceanice plate slipping under the South American plate-Converging Plates.The damage by the tsunami caused by the earthquake far exceeded the destruction resulting from the earthquake itself. The tsunami spread across the Pacific reaching Hawaii, the Philippines, and even Japan. The earthquake had triggered landslides,Tsunami and floods.It has been estimated that about 40% of the houses in Valdivia were destroyed, leaving 20,000 people homeless. 38 hours after the first shock Cordón Caulle erupted.However little attention was focused on the eruption as the media were too preoccupied with the huge damages and losses of the Earthquake.After the earthquake,a commitee was formed to tackle and solve the problems of the earthquake and in 1974 it became known as ONEMI.
