1960 Valdiva earthquake

The Valdiva earthquake or Great Chilean earthquake happenened on 22 May 1960, in the afternoon(19:11 GMT).The earthquake is to date the most powerful ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.5, its resulting tsunami had affected Southern Chile.The number of fatalities is at an estimate of 6000.The president had to cancel the traditional ceremony of the Battle of Iquique to oversee the emergency efforts.

The Great Chilean earthquake came after a smaller earthquake in Aracuo Province, all telecommunications to southern Chile were cut off.The second earthquake affected all of Chile between Talca and Chiloé Island more than 400,000 square kilometers.The damage caused by the earthquake was devastating-the entire water and electricity systems of Valvida were completely destroyed,extensive areas of land were completely flooded,water became a serious issue in one of Chile's most rainy regions. It has been estimated that about 40% of the houses in Valdivia were destroyed, leaving 20,000 people homeless.The river turned brown with sediment from landslides and was full of floating debris, including entire houses.
